Tony & Betty – Traditional Vietnamese Wedding – Rancho Cucamonga

Traditional Vietnamese wedding ceremony can’t start without a gift of Trau Cau which signify love and fidelity.  Trau Cau is a ground areca nut, wrapped in a betel leaf smeared with lime.

Chewed together, the betel, areca, and limestone yield a juice as red as blood. And the redder the juice, they say, the deeper the love.  These days in Vietnam, few people except for the elderly eat trau cau because the juice stains teeth and lips.

Li xi, Li xi.  Tony and Betty’s honeymoon are depending on how heavy these red envelopes are.  Red envelopes are mainly presented at social and family gatherings such as wedding ceremony or on holidays such as the Luna New Year. The red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck.  Feeling lucky, already.
